Day 02: Scenic Helicopter Excursion to Lake Rutundu – Scheduled Flight to Masai Mara Game Reserve

Early morning Scenic helicopter excursion to Lake Rutundu where you will enjoy picnic breakfast at 3100metres above sea level. Some of the finest trout fishing in East Africa can be enjoyed on the equator on Lake Rutundu on the northern slopes on Mt Kenya (and the more remote Lake Alice, a further short 1-hour hike up the mountain). The lakes (often described as mountain tarns) are an ideal spot for fishermen and hikers alike, within an unusual equatorial-alpine setting and enjoying extensive views.

Therafter you will drop off at Mount Kenya Safari thereafter where you will check out and board your helicopter flight back to Nairobi Wilson Airport. Upon arrival at Wilson Airport, you will board your scheduled flight to Masai Mara. Upon arrival in Masai Mara, you will be met and transferred to your camp with a game drive enroute. Arrive at the Lodge, Check in followed by lunch.  After lunch, enjoy an afternoon game drive.

The Maasai Mara is arguably Kenya’s most popular game reserve. It is most famous and most visited game reserve in Kenya. The film“Out of Africa” was made to a great exten in this sanctuary. There is a profusion of all types of wildlife including the big five. A spectacle worth seeing is the annual migration of millions of wildebeests, zebras, and the gazelles from the Serengeti plains across the Tanzania border and the Mara river to reach Maasai Mara grazing fields from late June. The game reserve abounds with birdlife since close to about four hundred and fifty two odd species have been recorded.

While on a game drive you will visit an Authentic Masai Village to experience this nomadic tribe’s way of life and see their colorful culture as you get to interact with the locals. As you arrive at the village, excited children and adults welcome you with song and dance, at certain times, one of the dancers will jump up and down gracefully. The jumps are several feet high!  You will be invited to try jumping – (dancing), too, and to your dismay you will be no match for their levitation act!! You will then be welcomed into one of the homesteads in the village, the village huts (called Manyatta) are made of cow dung and clay plastered over stick frames.

This is quite practical, the Masai maintain cattle herds, and the dung is always in generous supply, and it’s free. One of your host will give you an insight into Maasai life, some of them may not speak English but our guides will interpret for you and the elders so that stories may be exchanged. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the history and lifestyle of these Maasai. You may ask as many questions as you like and take photographs, or but some of their art work.

Later in the Evening you will have a Sundowner at a special Location within the lodge. Later as the sun sets, you will be transferred back to your camp/ Lodge for dinner and overnight. All meals and overnight included

Angama is a Swahili word which means “Suspended in mid-air” Situated on the north-west tip of the Mara Triangle, the stunning Angama Mara perches wistfully on the rim of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, offering impressive views over the Maasai Mara Reserve as the property sits high on the Rift Valley’s Oloolo Escarpment. More than just game viewing, staying at Angama will take your breath away as you soak in the incredible views of the Mara.

It is home to many other species of mammals – Leopards, cheetah, hyena, rhino, families of elephant, herds of cape buffalo, the elegant giraffe, eland, various species of antelope and gazelle, monkey, families of warthog and a host of others. Masai Mara is also home to over 500 species of birds. Ostrich and secretary birds can be seen wandering through the grass, whilst the bizarre-looking and large marabou stork can be seen sitting in trees. Ruppell’s Griffon vultures and Egyptian vultures follow the Great Migration, gorging themselves on carcasses left behind in the Masai Mara black crested snake eagles and African fish eagles hunt from the air.
